On July 9 to July 13, the Multicare Health System hosts their annual Nurse Camp for high schoolers in the grades tenth through twelfth. This event allows students to determine their future in nursing or associated health professions.
The process to be accepted is competitive as hundreds of applications were submitted and approximately a hundred students were accepted to the program in the summer of 2018. During the summertime, seniors Leah Capindo and Veronica Lara-Whitt spent a week participating in mock medical activities such as intubating, sutures and receiving traumas.
“I didn’t know I would feel so amazed by everything I was seeing,” Capindo says as if she had seen it in a movie. She had job-shadowed two child-life specialists on CT/MRI machines. She had watched her nurses comfort adolescents. She saw “a little girl who was about to undergo some type of procedure… she didn’t even to seem to notice what was happening [when the nurse inserted an IV needle in her arm],” said Capindo.
“After Nurse Camp, I can’t even begin to tell you how fulfilled I was with my experience,” said Lara-Whitt. During the camp, she had two days of job-shadowing individuals that work at Tacoma General Hospital, she spent time around a child-life specialist and an on-call nurse. “I learned how to cast broken limbs and suture up deep cuts and intubate patients [both] young and old,” she explains.
“The experience I had at the camp assured me that I’m going in the right path and my love for this field of medicine is genuine,” said Lara-Whitt.
