The school year started three weeks ago, whether the students were newly arrived or were joining us once again. For seniors, college applications are coming up fast, followed by graduation requirements just around the corner. These are big upcoming events for the high school-hardened seniors.
“I’m a little swamped,” said senior Emily Wonch. “I over-budgeted [my time]… I have [national] honors society [club], cross country, [and] AP classes.” For some seniors, this last year of high school may be the chance they wanted to pursue other interests and activities. However, these activities can become problematic to juggle and ultimately succeed in. “Some nights I have stayed up until 10:30 [p.m.] to finish homework,” said Wonch.
One might suggest this stress comes from the anticipation of deadlines on a student’s timeline. “I’m not stressed about [the school year],” said senior and tennis player Josh Cruz. “I have the SAT and the ASVAB in a little bit and that’ll stress me out.” Necessary events like tests can certainly put pressure on students, but there is also pressure that comes from the anticipation of tests. When students find themselves pressed more than usual to work, it requires the student to adapt to new issues the challenge presents. For example, learning to ride a bike may be a cause for anxiety, but as practice and repetition occurs, that anxiety goes away. A student may be prepared and less stressed for a regularly occurring weekly quiz, but when a major test happens, the anxiety comes once more.
Sometimes there is more than just stress for seniors. “I try not to [procrastinate], but I think everybody does,” said Wonch. Procrastination, a stress multiplier, can be a problem, but there could be a solution to all of that stress. “I do my best to not feel stress. That’s why I do tennis… to let out my anger [from it],” said Cruz. Doing activities that help work through stress, such as sports can be crucial to senior survival. Sports, hobbies, and other activities outside or at school can provide a healthy solution to stress.
